- Summary: I remember the release of the American film "The Well",
it must have been back in 1950 I think. A woman fell into a
well by accident, and many people took great efforts to try to
get her out of them throughout the night but I was really moved
by (what was reflected of the American society in) the main
point of the plot which was that it wasn't because she was
famous but because she was a living person that everyone spent
their time and money and wisdom. The real story that the movie
was based on and the style of the (documentary?) film was also
at that time fresh.

- Summary: When I think about it now, more than the reality of
American society that was a single ideal, if you think about
Hiroshima, Nagasaki, or the Vietnam war after that, it is
obvious but people that spend their young years during times of
war and come to accept as natural things like reports of
glorious (suicidal) deaths in battle (rather than surrender) and
kamikaze (or societal group suicide), for someone like me who
saw the burned corpses that looked like they could roll in the
ashes of my neighborhood right before my very eyes I was
surprised by that way of thinking. That life does not belong to
the society, it is not for some person's use but your own
personal life and so important that you wouldn't trade it for
anything else was (a concept) that at the border of the loss of
the war one of the various changes in values that I had. (?

newspapers, reports, the so called mass communications treats the

what I remember since the war for us Japanese that do not have
the human view or societal view

- Summary: In reaction to what many people thought at the time of the
war, that people's fate was a part of the fate of the country,
it was important for us to try to perceive (fix our thinking)
our personal
existence as something that could not be substituted. But if
you take to an extreme the absoluteness or deification of self
for the social animal of humans it inevitably leads to
hypocrisy. Life is not lighter than death, but life is not
heavier than the earth. (uh.) While we can not understand
those sorts of flowery words, we have a reality and we are faced
with the problem of that contradiction we can not find a way to

- Summary: When Saltol (?) died, Voltaire (?) and said the words
"death is violent" I was shocked. I don't think it was
something that someone emotionally says when their loved one
dies. It was from the Western people that think the individual
is unquestionably irreplaceable, it is natural that they lose
their belief in god and come to be logical, that violence is one
type of reverence that I remembered and at the same time I feel
that trying to understand death in that way is a big problem.

- Summary: I think at the bottom of our sensitivity as Japanese
is that the concept that death is natural still lives on (in our
society.) For old people that can not seperate from death by
using words like "to get bloated and old" understanding, saying
things like falled flowers, it isn't as naturally
confrontational human beings but in the end natural assimilation
that we express out attitude. But in reality our society does
not take on that shape.

community that had the natural uncertainty (change) of the

90 year old people can only be a society based on zen on the
surface. (?) Can't we say that the meaning of death is lost

- Summary: Death is certainly a scary thing. Everybody tries to
avoid it. As indicated by strange perpetual youth medicines the
hope of people is give birth to a magic that can help accelerate
the pace of medical advancement. (This sounds strange to me.)
The people that are prepared for the inevitability of their own
death see dreams of their eternal life after the annihilation of
their boadies. The people that see those dreams believe in
various things, some people believe that you will meet friends
and family from the previous world, or believe in reincarnation,
or believe in heaven. In the end people must face death clinging to
their isolated illusions. (? Strong statement, eh?)

societal thing. If one can prepare tentatively for one's own
death they are still not done; they still have to think about

the experience of their own death. Rather just for that reason
we pretend that we do not see our own death. It is as if death

- We are losing sight of death. For example, when small animals
kept at a nursery schools and the like die, the corpses are
buried somewhere in secret because we say that it is cruel to
show the body to the children. Or the ending of Grim's fairy
tales are always (made into, changes into??) happy endings.
Kids raised in the city don't have a chance to experience the
death of insects, not to mention people. The death that we
encounter every once in a while, of a grey haired person in a
clean hospital, that kind of death quickly is treated showily
(gaudily?) in a business-like manner.

looking at which community our personal death should belong to

nonsensical gag, but has degraded into a stimulation of the
senses.

life, or reject death and live a complete life. It isn't like
that is the only thing within the soul of a person, it is also
something that is part of the culture of living organisms. When
people accept their isolation at the same time the consensus
they reach about death, the fear of which they can not express
with natural language, the concept of supporting each other
comes into existence. I would like to believe that like fallen
leaves and the bodies of animals become nutrition for this
earth, the death of individuals become an opportunity for the
reincarnation of other people but is it possible for
totalitarianism or religion to achieve this kind of period?
(??) But it is clear that there is no way to hide from this
