Call failure rates, during the peak consumer hours of 6:00 p.m. to midnight, improved substantially during the second quarter, dropping from an average of 22.4 per cent in March to 12.6 per cent in June. Over a 24-hour period, call failure rates dropped from 12.2 per cent in March to 8.1 per cent in June.
Individual Web page download performance varied considerably. Among the 10 major consumer Web home pages tested by Inverse, the highest performing sites were two to three times as efficient as the poorest. Web throughput over a US Robotics Sportster 33.6 Faxmodem ranged from 22 to 7 kbps. The average for the 10 sites was 18 kbps -- the same as in March -- indicating that the Internet seems to be holding its own.
