We are currently developing some IP Multicast models within the OPNET simulation tool. We would like to inject real multicast traffic into the simulation tool and record the network control overhead and performance as a result of network element faults. This project requires that the student coordinate with other universities or ISPs to acquire real traffic traces, prepare them to be injected into the OPNET simulation tool as IP Multicast sources, inject faults into the network topology, and gather statistics on network behaviour (network convergence times and performance). Different topologies could be studied and compared. One topology that could be used, and from which data could be captured, is the Internet's MBONE network.
