Overview With the emergence of new computing paradigms, communication networks experience unprecedented transformation. Due to the proliferation of cloud computing and large datacenter networks, communication networks are faced with a multitude of new requirements. The ubiquity of media-rich smart phone and mobile device platforms are enabling upload and download of video places tremendous pressure on the communication medium. Moreover, the increasing importance of online services for government, industry, and society emphasizes the availability of networks. Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) devices are increasingly monitored and controlled over public communication networks.
Unfortunately, not only applications are progressing, but also attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Datacenter network attacks exploit a lack of transparency and can result in data exfiltration. Mobile devices fall prey to compromises, creating the prospect of a large-scale botnet consisting of mobile devices. Recently, numerous online services were attacked, where hosts of large-scale botnets participated to attack a victim in a Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. SCADA networks have also been targeted, perhaps the best known recent example is the Stuxnet malware.
In this backdrop, exciting research challenges arise. we will discuss emerging technologies: how they can help addressing these issues and whether they introduce new vulnerabilities. Sample technologies include Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Openflow, Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Named-Data-Networking (NDN), and the SCION Future Internet architecture. The goal of this workshop is to bring together academic and industry researchers together to discuss emerging problems, challenges, and potential solutions of these networking technologies.
To facilitate this discussion and engagement, we would like to solicit technical papers, including position papers. Early work that stimulate discussions are also strongly encouraged. The following is a non-exhaustive list of topics:
- Future Internet architecture security and privacy
- Cellular network security and privacy
- Software defined networking security and privacy
- Security of incremental deployment
- Novel security solutions using SDN

Venue The 2014 Network and Distributed System Security (NDSS) Symposium will be held on February 23-26. The venue will be the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in San Diego, California.
