W4261 Introduction to Cryptography: Quizzes
We will have frequent short quizzes that you can take online on
gradescope (linked from courseworks).
The goal of the quiz is to help us get an idea of how the class is
doing and where you are having difficulty, and also to motivate you
to prepare before each lecture and understand the material, and to
give you an early signal if you
are falling behind. Therefore, the quiz grading is designed to
emphasize taking the quiz and making an honest effort, rather than
answering everything correctly.
Quiz grading and administration:
- For each quiz that you submit, your score will
automatically be increased by 2.5 points, up to a ceiling of 10 points.
For example, a score of 2 will be converted to 4.5, a score of 6.5 will
be converted to 9, and a score of 7.5 or above will be converted
to 10. A quiz that is not submitted gets a score of 0.
- At the end of the semester, the worst quiz score will be omitted, and the rest will be
averaged to get the overall quiz score (which is 15% of the final
grade).
- You must take the quiz alone, without discussion with anyone
else (although you are welcome to go over lecture material with
other students). You don't have to finish the quiz in a single
pass -you could submit part of it, and then go back and complete
the rest (as long as it's before the deadline, and you do it on
your own without any discussion with others). You are allowed
to use your class notes/textbook when taking the quiz, although
the intention is that the quiz should be solvable without any
materials, after you have gone over the previous lectures and
digested them. No late quizzes will be accepted.
- Don't ask questions about the quiz on the discussion board or
office hours, until after the quiz due date is over. If you think
there's a typo or an issue with a quiz problem, post a private
message to the staff on edstem.
- The quiz is meant to be easier than homework problems, and
meant to be completed quickly - within at most 15-30 minutes if
you've gone over and understood the class material to date. If
you find yourself working much longer, contact us and come to
office hours (sooner rather than later).
- The quiz will be graded automatically, so don't add
additional characters or explanations after your answer. If you
think there is a mistake in the grading, submit a regrade request
(within a week) through gradescope.
- After the due date, you can see correct solutions and
explanations on the quiz in gradescope. If you got something
wrong, make sure you understand what your mistake was (but
grade-wise, it is not likely to be an issue, given the grading scheme).
- Typically (though this may vary), a quiz will be given every
3 lectures or so. You will always have at least 24 hours to complete it.
